Helvetica

Helvetica is developed by Edward Hoffmann in Switzerland and he named his new design as Helvetica which is the original Latin name for Switzerland. Hoffmann’s new design becomes an internationally used typeface. After I watched this film ‘Helvetica’ and I realized that Helvetica is more than just a typeface. I never know there is a history behind and how it has a tremendous effect to our lives. As I more pay attention to the fonts, I notice Helvetica is everywhere. Additionally, it is a bit of shock how  Helvetica can be fit in every single part of our lives. As the graphic designer, Wim Crouwel illustrates, Helvetica is also be used by US government moreover by other countries. I believe it is difficult to invent a standard design that can be used in our everyday lives.

Decasia

Bill Morrison’s film, the state of Decay was way beyond my expectation. It started out with the unpleasant sound of detuned instruments As the music began, the images started appearing, but they were not presented in the way I was expecting. It was like I have seen anything like these before. As I illustrate the  piece, gradually this group of children marched and it looked like they were walking towards you. Somewhat, it reminded me of a scene from a horror movie because the background music set the revolting atmosphere. Nothing was done in the actual film prints, Morrison borrowed most of the images from facilities. Moreover, the actual film parts accelerate the decomposition well. In spite of the disturbing music and all the frightening images, Morrison created such an abstract world that somewhat reflected every issues in our society.

The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction: Walter Benjamin

In his essay, ‘The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction’, precisely argues that Art is replicable and it draws us to the issues with its originality. The reproduction of art negatively affects the original work and furthermore, it decays the appreciation of time and space. Like films with mechanical equipment destroys the aura of art and they show us false existence by using lighting and special effects. For example, where film and photography present an image of pictures, painting tends to remain original. However, as we live in twentieth century, film and photography massively become one of the main sources in modern art and the replicated art like is considered as art itself. As illustrates, photographers are the artists who create their own art by using all the images that we see everyday. Taking photos is a same process as painting except using cameras instead of brushes and each photo has its own value and meaning like the other painting pieces.

Clearly, Art is changeable.
